New MSN TV 2 software update

Release 1.1.1 (Build 5128) is rolling to all MSN TV 2 users beginning today. There is a major fix to streamed video quality. We are also supporting 802.11g now...woohoo! A few more printer have been added to the supported list as well. I will be updating the FAQ with the details today before I go on vacation.

My parent's MSNTV2 box got this update today. When my mother clicked the button to start the update, the screen went black. Accustomed to the long updates on the old WebTV, they just let it be for five or six hours. When they returned, the box is now dead - totally non-responsive, even after several power cycles and rests (no power at all). The box simply will not turn on and appears "dead"/non-responsive. My brother noticed that the top of the box was almost too hot to touch. I've told them to contact MSNTV support, but I sure hope the new update did not turn their box into a doorstop/paperweight.

Received by update thru broadband and it took less than 20 minutes.
My wife mentioned some of email prompts were improved.
What was improved on?

My Mom's unit also received the update today and has totally crashed afterwards. I had it set up via wireless broadband and it will now not connect via that or dial-up.

She's 300 miles away and 80 years old so it's kind of tough to troubleshoot the problems over the phone.

So far, I have to say that I am quite disappointed with the MSNTV 2 unit. Her old WebTV worked flawlessly for 6 years. So far, we have had nothing but problems with the MSNTV 2 unit.

Prior to the upgrade, she had to uplug the wireless USB adapter each time she wanted to log on as it would continually not recognize it. Of course, now, it recognizes the USB adapter but can't negotiate an IP address through DHCP. The other computers on the network get their IP's with no problem so I know the router is doing it's job.

Pain in the butt...

Bill

As always, if you are having immediate connectivity issues, please call MSN TV support.

Tommy... do you know/can you tell us whether this newly-released update contains the fix wherein new mail arrivals for subscribers whose email addy ends "@webtv.net" cause the illumination of the far-right signal button on the front panel of the MSN TV2 unit? (This bugfix was promised "late in '04/early in '05" if you recall.) Thx for any answer you can give prior to your vaca, and have a good time! :-)

To see some of the updates, go to http://www.msntv.com/tv/extra/upgrade.asp with your MSN TV unit. You cannot access this with a PC. If you do, you will be forwaded to the home page.

Query: My wife has new MSN TV2, replacing the old one. We're on cable broadband, MSN TV2 seems to be working well. BUT: understand her device can read photos if we have a card reader. However, is there a way to feed my extensive photo list from my computer to her MSN TV2, without laboriously shifting all photos onto email, me to her? Any advice appreciated!

Release 1.1.1 (Build 5128) does not support the Linksys WUSB54G wireless USB adapter.
