Keyboard Issue Update (The Aftermath)
Just received this message in my hotmail (that I use for my personal MSN TV 2s at home):
Dear MSN TV 2 Subscriber: The manufacturer of the MSN TV 2 Player, RCA/Thomson, recently discovered that users of some keyboards produced early in the manufacturing process are finding that in some circumstances not all of the letters they type are appearing on the screen. RCA/Thomson is therefore replacing these keyboards free of charge.To determine if you have one of the affected keyboards, you need to see if your keyboard’s serial number falls within the following ranges:
621400001 — 621401140
701400001 — 701401600
702400001 — 702402100
705400001 — 705400170
To check the serial number of your keyboard, please turn it upside down. You will see three number or number/letter combinations that begin with Model, P/N and S/N. The serial number is a 9-digit number listed after S/N.
If your keyboard’s serial number falls within the ranges above, please call RCA/Thomson toll-free at 800-722-9599. Please listen to the menu items carefully. Press Option 3 (Repair & Exchange Assistance) and then Option 1 (Additional Help) to speak to an agent. RCA/Thomson will ship you a new keyboard free of charge. Prior to making this call, you need to have the following information readily available:Serial number of the keyboard;
Serial number of the MSN TV 2 Internet & Media Player (see below for instructions on how to do this);
Purchase date of the device or activation date of your MSN TV subscription
To get the serial number for your MSN TV 2 Player, please turn over your set-top box and write down the number listed on the label after the word “Serial.”
Do not return your keyboard to your local retailer. In order to receive a new keyboard, you must follow the procedure outlined above.You will not need to show that you are having difficulties with your existing keyboard. You also will not need to send back your existing keyboard. There is also no need to contact MSN TV Customer Care. RCA/Thomson will completely take care of the replacement of your keyboard.
If your keyboard’s serial number does not fall within the ranges of numbers above, yet you are experiencing difficulties with it, please take the following steps:
First take the update if it is offered to you when you log in to the MSN TV service;
Be sure there is nothing blocking the line of sight between your keyboard and the front of your MSN TV 2 Internet & Media Player;
Change the batteries in your keyboard
If after following the above steps, you continue experiencing keyboard difficulties, please contact MSN TV Technical Support at: 1-866-GO-MSNTV (1-866-466-7688) for additional assistance.
This is basically the end game of the keyboard issue that users originally discovered early on. Thanks to those that sent corresponded with me personally to help MSN TV work through this issue.
Got my unit the first week of Oct at Best Buy. Mucho trouble, no meaningful help! My keyboard still has a occasional skip and suffers the lag/go syndrome when typing. I did improve the performance of my unit by reducing the ambient light to the I/R receiver. Still not as good as webtv! My keyboard is #804----- so is perfect! Hah! :~) Seeing what I go thru, my wife will NOT trade in her web classic! Who could blame her?
What was it that Yogi Berra said? :~)

Wow! I got one of those defective keyboards with my MSNTV2 unit on Oct. 12. I dragged my feet about calling about it. I finally called Thomson late Wednesday afternoon. Around noon today (Friday) the Fed Ex man rang the doorbell and handed me my new replacement kb. I tried it out on some e-mails and it works great. Pretty good service, I would say.

Posted by: KAT brdi at January 21, 2005 12:38 PMWe had one of the bum keyboards. I collected the info and called the number indicated. They said OK, but the unit was on back-order and would ship to us ASAP. But no database is perfect; Lo and behold, it arrived not 4 days later. It works perfectly. Kudos and thanks for the fix. :-)
Posted by: DrDan in MA at February 5, 2005 03:00 PMI bought MSNTV2 as soon as it was offered. It was delivered 12/10/04 but the invoice is dated 11/10/04. Hooked up 12/21/04. Crashes regularly. I have complained for months. A tech said 2 wks ago I need a replacement but to log the crashes. So I did and when I called again the tech checked my record and said I needed it/ When I got to that dept.they want $59.95 plus $9.95 postage!! 90 days warranty and they are basing it on date of invoice which is ridiculous. Any suggestions on who I should complain to or just get a lawyer? Thanks.
