All about Flash Cards and USB Card Readers

What is a USB Card reader? Well, the best place to start is what is a "card" and why to do we want to read it. "Card" refers to a flash memory card that is used as persistent storage (meaning it doesn't erase if you unplug it from power). What do we put on these cards? They are most commonly found in digital cameras. Digital cameras use them as "film" to store photos. The cool part is that you can copy the photos to your MSNTV 2 box or send them via email and then reuse the card without having to pay someone to develop the film or buy new film to use. As you can see your digital camera becomes a huge money saver over time versus the cost of a film camera (which is why in only a few short years, digital cameras have basically done away with film cameras and only pros would really consider buying film anymore...I still have a few that I use that produce interesting effects, but other than that I use my two digital cameras very often).

Flash memory cards can also be used to store music and videos. MSNTV2 can play music and videos directly from the cards via a card reader.

Ahh...so that brings us to card readers. They do exactly that: read cards. You hook the card reader up to the MSNTV2's USB port and the card reader will let your MSNTV2 use the content that's locked up inside of the cards (assuming you have a card reader that is compatible with MSNTV2--most are, some aren't AND assuming your card fits in your card reader--not so much a problem anymore, but still can be).

Card readers generally say 5-in-1, 12-in-1, etc...Are they different? Well yes and no. There are, in fact many types of card formats: Compact Flash (CF), Secure Digital (SD), miniSD, MemoryStick, MemoryStick Duo, xD, etc etc. Which one do you get? Well the answer is "Which one fits in your camera (or less commonly, your MP3 player)?". Once you've figured that out, you just need to make sure your card reader can read the same type of card and you're home free. Most cameras nowadays use SD. Sony's usually use MemoryStick or MemoryStick Duo. Digital SLR cameras (the big ones where you can change lens) generally use CF or even two different types of cards on the same camera. It really depends on what camera you have. There really is no one "better" format than another...it usually comes down to cost. CF is cheapest, SD is second, etc. CF also has larger capacities. I have a Hitachi 4GB Microdrive that I got for $150 that powers my Canon Digital Rebel XT Camera...awesome card. There is no 4GB SD card so that's why my camera still uses CF cards. So when a card reader says "12-in-1" this means it supports 12 different card formats?

Anyway, here's a list of recommended cards and card readers (pay special attention to the card READER list...we've found a couple brands/models to be incompatible with MSNTV2).:
